The Biko Progressive Resistance Bands are a very simple device, clipping to the “D” ring of a Roman harness, and attaching to a padded foot cuff just below the hock. Whether you are in general practice or are specifically practicing rehab/sports medicine, the Biko Progressive Resistance Bands have a place in your hospital! How do the Biko PR Bands work?

The Biko’s elastic bands act as a support mechanism, pulling the foot forward, and preventing it from slipping sideways or backwards and help the dog when walking or turning. This is very helpful, not only for weak dogs, but for dogs with moderate ataxia and knuckling under but still able to stand even when requiring effort. The Biko PR Bands protect and prevent the feet from knuckling under. Here is a short video of “Tex” Olijslager, German shepherd with advanced degenerative myelopathy. See the Biko in action.

How do the Biko PR Bands work?

The Biko’s elastic bands act as a support mechanism, pulling the foot forward, and preventing it from slipping sideways or backwards. This is very helpful, not only dogs with hind limb weakness, but for dogs with moderate ataxia and knuckling under, but who are still able to stand even when requiring effort. The resistance offered by the bands helps to increase muscle tone and strength, especially to the quads, gastrocnemius, and hip extensors. The Biko PR Bands assist the forward movement of the feet and protect and prevent the feet from knuckling.

You are probably familiar with the original Biko Physio Brace, used on over 3,500 dogs since its release in 2004. We had great success with the original at the Animal Rehabilitation and Wellness Institute, PLLC. We have now taken the Biko a step farther, incorporating a color-coded system of progressive resistance.

The Biko PR Bands serve as an additional physiotherapeutic modality in a rehabilitation setting and it can be used in addition to or concurrently with other rehab modalities, including underwater treadmill, land treadmill, cavalettes, peanut exercise balls, balance boards, etc. The Biko PR Bands are not only effective in rehab, but pet owners can easily continue to use them at home as a therapeutic or assistive device. Direct involvement in their dog’s care greatly increases compliance.

Will the Biko Progresive Resistance Bands Help My Patient?

The Biko PR Bands are used to strengthen muscles and joints and improve proprioception. For some patients, it is a mobility aid that helps to stabilize gait and prevent knuckling over. For canine athletes and working dogs, it is a resistance training device that improves performance and helps to prevent injury. The Biko PR Bands were originally designed as an assistive device for dogs suffering from long-term, chronic problems involving hind limb ataxia or paresis. Because these symptoms are consistent with a large number of problems, the Biko is recommended for a wide range of problems, including:

  • Vertebral or pelvic osteoarthritis
  • Canine hip dysplasia
  • Cruciate ligament tear/rupture repair (at least 8 weeks post-op)
  • Patellar luxation
  • Inactivity/overweight
  • Degenerative myelopathy
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Fibrocartilaginous embolism
  • Cerebellar ataxia
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hyperadrenocorticism/Cushing’s
  • Lumbosacral disease

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING

“I bought a pair of Performance Resistance Bands from you through my dog’s physical therapist. Oscar my Swedish Vallhund had ruptured a cervical disc and was totally paralyzed from the neck down. Emergency surgery saved his life but learning to walk again was nothing short of a herculean task. Oscar had been a top show dog in his breed before his accident. After he began to walk again, a neurologist told me that she didn’t think he’d ever walk normally again. Well, she was wrong. We performed intense physical therapy with Oscar and one year later he WON his breed at Westminster! We still use the bands today as part of his PT regimen to keep him in shape. I really believe they made a HUGE difference in Oscar getting his normal hind gait back again. And so, I wanted to thank you for an awesome product!”

“I have been using the Biko for over one year in my animal rehabilitation program and absolutely love them. I have used them for back disease, cranial cruciate post-operative, neurological disease, and conditioning and training of agility dogs. We use them in an outside of the water treadmill to add extra resistance in motion. The ability to add resistance to the hip and knee extension has lengthened stride and built good gluteal muscles. The patients are receptive and owners excite about the ease of use. I recommend these for any animal rehabilitation program.”
